PEX vs CPVC for a repipe in a Florida home
Both are approved for a repipe, and both outlast the pipe they replace. PEX is flexible, runs in long pieces with few joints, shrugs off the chlorine in our water, and tolerates a hot attic, which is why it has become the common choice for long attic runs. CPVC is rigid, glued, and has a long track record here, but it turns brittle with age and heat. The right answer depends on the house, and your estimate should name the material and the fitting system.
Every repipe estimate in Southwest Florida comes down to a choice between two plastics: PEX, the flexible tubing, or CPVC, the rigid cream-colored pipe that has been in Florida walls since the 1980s. Both are approved. Both are better than what they replace. Many repipes here now use PEX for the long runs, for reasons that have a lot to do with our attics and our water, and copper still has its place at the water heater and where a rigid, visible line is wanted. What the attic does to pipe
On a slab home there is no basement or crawl space, so a repipe runs the new lines through the attic. A Southwest Florida attic in August can sit well above 130 degrees for hours every afternoon, and it does that for half the year.
- PEX is rated for hot water inside the pipe and tolerates ambient attic heat without losing flexibility. It needs support at regular intervals so it does not sag between rafters, and it must be kept out of sunlight: UV exposure degrades it, so no runs near an uncovered gable vent or skylight.
- CPVC is also rated for hot water, but the material stiffens with age and heat. Twenty-year-old CPVC from a hot attic can crack when a fitting is touched, which is why some 1990s homes are being repiped now. New CPVC will do the same thing on the same schedule.
Insulation matters for both. Lines buried in blown insulation stay cooler in summer and warmer on the few cold nights we get.
What our water does to pipe
Lee and Collier County utilities disinfect with chlorine or chloramine, and the water on the hard side. Chlorine is the reason polybutylene failed, and it is hard on copper. PEX is rated for chlorinated water and is not affected by the hardness. CPVC handles chlorine well too; its problems are mechanical, not chemical.
One caution that applies to both: some thread sealants, pipe dopes, spray foams, and pest treatments attack CPVC, and a few affect PEX. A plumber who works with these materials every day knows what can touch them. A handyman with a tube of the wrong sealant may not.
Fittings, and why the joint is the whole argument
Pipe rarely fails in the middle of a run. It fails at joints. That makes the fitting system as important as the pipe.
- PEX runs in long continuous pieces from the manifold or trunk to each fixture, bending around corners without a fitting. Where a fitting is needed, it is a crimp ring, a clamp ring, or an expansion sleeve, each made with a dedicated tool and each inspectable by eye. Fewer joints, and joints that do not depend on glue setting properly in a hot attic.
- CPVC is joined with primer and solvent cement at every change of direction. A good glue joint is permanent. A rushed one, or one made in a dusty attic in the heat, can hold for years and then let go. A CPVC repipe simply has more joints than a PEX repipe of the same house.
Ask which fitting system the estimate includes. Any of the standard PEX systems is fine; “we will see” is not an answer.
Rodents, noise, and expansion
Three practical points that come up in attics here:
- Rodents. Rats and squirrels in attics are a fact of life in older neighborhoods, and they chew. PEX is softer than CPVC. Good installers protect penetrations and keep runs away from the eaves where animals enter, and pest control matters more than pipe choice. This is worth asking about.
- Noise. PEX flexes and damps water hammer, the bang when a washer valve snaps shut. CPVC transmits it. A PEX repipe is usually a quieter house.
- Expansion. Both plastics grow and shrink with temperature more than copper does. PEX needs room to move at supports. CPVC needs expansion loops on long straight runs. An installer who knows the material plans for it.
Warranties, insurance, and copper
PEX manufacturers back their tubing and fittings with a warranty when a trained installer uses the matching system. CPVC carries a manufacturer warranty too. Neither replaces the plumber’s own guarantee, which is the one you will actually call.
On insurance, what a 4-point inspection here cares about is the presence of polybutylene, galvanized steel, or visible corrosion, and whether the plumbing has been updated with a permit. A permitted repipe in either PEX or CPVC is what the inspector wants to see. Whether a carrier treats one plastic differently from the other is a question for the carrier.
Copper deserves a word. It is still the choice for exposed runs, at the water heater, and in some commercial work, and some homeowners simply prefer it. For a whole-house repipe on a slab home it costs the most in material and labor, and our water chemistry is the reason older copper homes get pinholes. It is a fair option, not the default.
Where CPVC still fits, and where a homeowner stops
CPVC is the better fit for a short straight exposed run, a repair on an existing CPVC system that is otherwise healthy, or a spot where a rigid drop looks cleaner than tubing. Some plumbers prefer it for the vertical drops inside walls with PEX in the attic. None of that changes the whole-house recommendation for most homes here.
A repipe is permitted, inspected work that touches every fixture in the house. The material choice is one decision among many, and the crew’s familiarity with that material is what makes the joints hold. Choosing a plumber who repipes with one system every week matters more than the difference between the two plastics.

Common questions
Is PEX safe for drinking water?
Yes. PEX is approved for potable water under the plumbing code used in Florida and has been in service for decades. Some people notice a faint taste for a few days after a repipe as the new lines flush, and it fades. If taste matters to you, a whole-home filter addresses it and the chlorine at the same time.
What about copper?
Copper is still an excellent pipe, and it is still used for exposed runs and at the water heater. For a whole-house repipe here it is rarely the first choice: pinhole leaks from our water chemistry are one of the reasons older copper homes are being repiped, and the material and labor make it the most expensive option. It is a fair choice, not the default.
Can PEX and CPVC be mixed?
Yes, with the right transition fittings. It is common to see a PEX repipe that keeps a short CPVC or copper stub at a fixture, or that uses a rigid drop where a line has to run straight and exposed. The joint between them is a specific fitting, not a glued or forced connection.
