I have a water softener. Do I still need a filter?
Probably, yes. A water softener does one job: it trades calcium and magnesium for sodium so scale stops forming. It does not touch chlorine, chloramine, sediment, or anything you would want out of your drinking water. Most Southwest Florida homes with a softener add a carbon filter ahead of it for taste, smell, skin, and hair, a sediment prefilter to protect both, and a small reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink for drinking water.
You paid for a softener. Glasses come out of the dishwasher clear, the showerhead has stopped crusting over, and laundry feels better. And yet the kitchen tap still smells faintly like a pool, your skin is still dry in March, and you are not sure you want to fill a drinking glass from it. That is not a broken softener. That is a softener doing exactly the one job it was built for, and nothing else.
What a softener does, and what it does not
A water softener is an ion exchange tank. Hard water passes over a bed of resin beads, and the beads trade the calcium and magnesium in the water for sodium. The result is soft water: no scale in the water heater, no spots on glass, soap that lathers. When the beads fill up with hardness minerals, the softener flushes them with brine from the salt tank and starts over.
That is the entire job. A softener does not remove:
- Chlorine or chloramine. The disinfectant passes through untouched, and it slowly damages the resin on the way.
- Sediment. Sand, rust flakes, and grit collect in the resin bed and shorten its life.
- Taste and smell. Softened water tastes like softened water. The pool smell is still there.
- Iron and sulfur in any real quantity. A softener can handle a trace of iron. On a well with staining or a rotten egg smell, it fouls.
- Anything you would filter out of drinking water. Dissolved solids, lead from old fixtures, and the rest are outside its reach.
So the question is not whether the softener is working. It is what else your water has in it.
Carbon: the filter for chlorine and chloramine
Every public utility in Lee and Collier County disinfects its water, with chlorine or with chloramine, a more stable blend of chlorine and ammonia. That disinfectant is what you smell in the shower, what dries out skin and hair, what fades the rubber seals in your faucets and appliances, and what breaks down softener resin over the years.
A whole-home carbon filter installed ahead of the softener removes it. Plain carbon handles chlorine well. Chloramine takes catalytic carbon, a treated form that breaks the chlorine-ammonia bond, so it matters which one your utility uses. The utility’s annual report says.
Put carbon first and the softener behind it, and both last longer: the carbon strips the disinfectant before it reaches the resin, and the softener handles hardness the carbon cannot touch.
A sediment prefilter protects everything downstream
A simple cartridge filter on the main line, ahead of the carbon and the softener, catches sand, rust, and grit. City water normally carries very little, but a main break or hydrant flushing sends a slug of it down the line, and on well water there is always some. A five-micron cartridge costs little, takes a minute to change, and keeps the expensive media behind it clean. If you have a softener and no prefilter, this is the first thing to add.
Drinking water: reverse osmosis at the sink
Softened water is fine to drink for most people, but it is not what most people want in a glass. A reverse osmosis unit under the kitchen sink pushes water through a membrane that removes most dissolved solids, including the sodium the softener added, and delivers it to its own small faucet. It is the standard answer for drinking, cooking, coffee, and ice in a home that already has whole-home treatment, and it is the one piece of equipment that actually changes what is in the water you swallow.
RO makes a few gallons a day, not a house worth, so it belongs at the sink and nowhere else.
Softener or salt-free conditioner?
If you are deciding whether to keep the softener at all, the alternative is a salt-free conditioner. It does not remove hardness. It changes how the minerals behave so they pass through instead of sticking as scale. No salt bags, no brine discharge, no drain, and the minerals stay in the water. - Keep or choose a softener if you want the softest feel, the least soap use, and the strongest protection for a tankless water heater, and you do not mind buying salt and giving it a drain.
- Choose salt-free if you want scale protection with no salt, no discharge, and no maintenance beyond media changes, and you are on a septic system that you would rather not send brine into.
Either one still needs carbon ahead of it.
The right order, the bypass, and maintenance
From the point where water enters the house, the order is: sediment prefilter, carbon filter, softener or conditioner, then on to the water heater and the rest of the house. RO branches off separately under the kitchen sink. Each stage protects the one after it, and swapping the order shortens the life of something.
Every stage needs a bypass valve, so you can change media or service a tank without shutting off the house. If your softener was installed with no bypass, adding one is worth doing when the carbon goes in.
Maintenance is the part people skip. Sediment cartridges need changing on a schedule. Carbon media has a service life measured in years, and once it is spent the water passes through as if it were not there. Softener resin degrades faster on chlorinated water without carbon in front of it. RO filters and membranes have their own intervals. Ask for the schedule in writing when the equipment goes in, and put it on the calendar.
Changing cartridges, adding salt, and running a hardness test strip are homeowner jobs. Cutting into the main line to add carbon, a prefilter, or a bypass is licensed plumbing work, and on a septic lot the softener discharge deserves a conversation before anything is connected.

Common questions
Does a softener remove chlorine?
No. Softener resin exchanges hardness minerals for sodium and lets chlorine pass straight through. Worse, chlorine and especially chloramine slowly break the resin down, which is one reason a carbon filter belongs ahead of the softener rather than behind it.
Is softened water safe to drink?
For most people, yes. The sodium added is small, roughly in proportion to how hard the water was. Anyone on a sodium-restricted diet should ask their doctor, and many households simply put a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink or run an unsoftened line to it.
Can I put the carbon filter after the softener instead?
You can, but carbon ahead of the softener protects the resin from chlorine and chloramine, and the softener then protects nothing that needs it. Carbon first, softener second, is the order that makes each piece last longer.
